Have you noticed three is a magic number in publishing? Today's guest has three accolades to her name - Air Force veteran, Coast Guard spouse, and NYT's best selling author of paranormal romance! Please join me in welcoming the incomparable Larissa Ione! From her website,
Her name is Larissa and the fate of mankind rests on her powerful shoulders. If she falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too.
Kim: Okay, I manipulated the first sentence of the promo material for ETERNAL RIDER. When you served as an Air Force meteorologist, you did have the fate of mankind on your shoulders - Global Reach cannot be accomplished without accurate weather. What did you learn/experience in the Air Force that has helped you in pursuing your writing dreams/career?
Larissa: Heh...I love the manipulation of the Eternal Rider sentence. Anyway, I think that what I learned in the Air Force amounted to, "If I can get through Basic Training, I can get through anything." Which means that although there were times I felt like giving up before I was published, I would eventually get back on the horse and try again. The Air Force really taught me to face my fears and defeat them.
Kim: Being a military veteran and even a military spouse is all about successful partnerships. How did you and Stephanie become partners as Sydney Croft?
Larissa: We met in a crit group and found that we really meshed, and we loved each others' writing. I kept telling her that we needed to write something together, and she thought I was kind of crazy. But then, while I was running from Katrina and going through the cleanup, she felt really helpless, and she started writing a paranormal scene about a Navy SEAL who was running from his own hurricane...something he attracted. Problem was, she got to the end of the scene and didn't know where to go with it. So after my son and I had settled in Washington state with my mom (we were homeless because of the hurricane,) I was pretty defeated and not writing. She sent me the scene and told me to write the next one. I had no idea what to do. She'd left the scene with the hero finding a strange woman in his shower. Stephanie had no idea who the woman was...she said it was my job to figure it out. So I wrote the scene. She took it from there, and in two weeks, we had a proposal to send to her agent. The proposal, which was for 3 novellas, turned into a 3 book deal, and Sydney Croft was born!
Kim: I enjoyed reading your blog entry, Thickening Skin and Review Scars. What was/is tougher - basic training? relocating after Katrina? breaking into publishing? fulfilling expectations once you made the NYT's best seller's list?
Larissa: Yikes. All of those things have been tough...just in different ways. But I think that Basic Training toughened me up and has allowed me to handle everything else better. So Basic was probably the toughest thing, but probably because it was my first true challenge. Katrina was personally devastating, but I had a lot of support, so I didn't get through it alone like I did with Basic Training. The NYT thing...well, I have to say, it's extremely stressful. And maybe just a little tougher than Basic...because Basic was a test of my abilities, and *I* determined whether or not I made it through. The NYT is completely out of my hands and out of my control. So it's definitely tough!
Mahalo, Larissa, for joining us at SOS Aloha! Mary Gramlich, The Reading Reviewer, posted a review of ETERNAL RIDER:
If the fate of the world rests on your shoulders do you have time to find love?
ETERNAL RIDER is Book 1 in a new series, Lords of Deliverance:
They are here. They ride. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.
Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

Hi Larissa,
ReplyDeleteLove your books.I too have had to overcome difficulties. My main one was having to become my mother's caretaker. She suffered a major stroke and is totally dependent on me for everything. It's tough because she was always my rock. Now I have to be hers.I am getting through it day by day and reading helps relieve the pressures.

Hi Larissa! Sometimes I feel like your stalker! Kidding.
ReplyDeleteYou know how much I love your books and I can not wait to get Eternal Rider!
Overcome Difficulties. Ironically nothing is coming to mind. However one difficulty I am trying to over come is my self doubt on my writing and drawing. I believe both are crap and not worthwhile.
I've been steadily working on both regardless, trying to improve. Trying things, challenging myself, to overcome. I am less skeptical as I was several years ago. I still have a long way to go until I can surpass my doubt but I am working on it.

You are an author new to me - love the concept of the Four Horsemen! Someimes it is a challenge for me to stay positive during the day. But after reading your interview, particularly about your experience with Hurricane Katrina, I have found renewed optimism.
ReplyDeleteSue
The biggest challenge I had to overcome was graduating with an engineering degree in ceramics when very few women were in the field. I got accepted into the number one ceramic engineering school in the world back in 1980 and then almost flunked out freshman year. While in high school I had straight A's and never had to study for anything. When I got to Alfred University it was a total shock. I didn't know how to study. Thank heaven I figured it out after two semesters. When I graduated it took two months to find a job in another state where I was the only female in the engineering department. Fun times ;).
ReplyDeleteI love your characters Larissa and would love to win this. vsloboda(at)gmail(dot)com
Something I have overcome? Parenthood! LOL.
ReplyDeleteOur last kid turned 18 yesterday. Now all 4 of our kids are over 18! *dances* We made it! Before you roll your eyes, let me tell you, we have Damien and Taylor age 20, Austin is 19 and now the baby Tanner just turned 18. Now tell me you wouldn't be doing a happy dance as well.
All joking aside, my kids are by far my most difficult and important task ever and my proudest accomplishment as well.
Larissa, I have loved your books since I bought Pleasure Unbound on a whim on 09/04/08 for my Kindle. Thank you for not giving up.
My biggest challenge was and is learning to deal with life after the death of my 16 year old son in a car wreak. It will be three years in August and every day is a challenge. I don't say this for sympathy; it is simply the truth. Dont get me wrong, there are many good days. Not every day is difficult; just different since Ethan is gone. :) Just different.
ReplyDeleteAloha, Angie. Know that we are with you in spirit as you meet the challenge.
ReplyDeleteDoes the LA mean you live in Los Angeles? If yes, are you attending RT? If yes, check out my blog about RT events:
http://sosaloha.blogspot.com/2011/03/countdown-to-rt-booklovers-convention.html
I extend an invitation to the LA readers to attend the SOS Military Mixer. No doubt you are coming out for the Book Fair on Saturday morning ... so stay for the SOS Military Mixer in the afternoon.
My biggest obstical right now is juggling raising 3 girls, marriage, a full time job and full time nuclear medicine school..... It's insane
ReplyDeleteHollybwright[at]comcast dot net
The biggest thing I have to overcome is happening right now. I have been trying to find a job for awhile and I'm still looking. I also am taking care of my disabled parents who I live with. So things are more challenging than they used to be for me, but there are bright spots.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest challenge? HuH! That's easy; because everything else has been a piece of cake. JUST KIDDING!!! Life is hard enough. But my biggest challenge was boot camp. UGH! If the physical didn't kill you, the mental almost did! I made it and became a US Marine!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the new series Larissa!
I think it was probably going to college and getting through school.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest challenge I had to overcome was when my mom and my little sister moved out in high school due to my mom's job out of the country. It was even harder since my parents weren't divorced or anything, but I still had to deal with not seeing most of my family every day.
ReplyDeleteStephanie
Wow...some of you have challenges that just...wow. And all of you have faced challenges that have made big impacts on your lives.
ReplyDeleteAngie-la, my heart goes out to you. I can't imagine anything worse.
Kim, thanks for having me. It's always great to be here!
Hi Larissa, I love your books too. My biggest challenge was getting my college degree - I went to school part time while I worked full time in the Navy. From station to station, college campus to college campus, overseas and in the US I persisted and got that degree! (quilter892ataoldotcom)
ReplyDeleteEternal Rider sounds great.
ReplyDeleteI think mine was probably getting though college. Lots of stuff happened that first year that tried to delay or change it, but managed to finish and in four years.
