Let's start our countdown to Thanksgiving with a special guest - historical romance author Grace Burrowes:
Grace Burrowes is the pen name for a prolific and award-winning author of historical romances. The Heir, received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist, and was selected as a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year for 2010. Both The Heir and its follow-up, The Solider, are New York Times and USA Today bestsellers. Kim: Can you share a favorite sight, sound, and smell from Maryland?
Grace: There are so many. Much of the year, it’s green as can be here. The old folks talk about “turn your back on the yard and it goes back to the mountain,” meaning weeds are soon joined by saplings, and a couple seasons later, you can’t tell it ever was a yard. It’s lush here…
In early spring, I listen for the peepers, little cheeping tree frogs singing for their true loves; summer brings lightening bugs; fall is the best—frisky with the sound of the corn husks scraping in the wind and the scent of fallen leaves on the breeze. Winter brings the first snow flurries, the horses in shaggy winter coats, and of course, long, cold nights and brilliant frosty mornings.
Maybe the variety is what I love best—the constant change.

Kim: What did you learn from law school, law practice, and/or master's program that you could apply to writing?
Grace: The master’s program was an interesting slice of life, dealing as it did with conflict resolution in a context larger than my US frame of reference. I learned a lot of lessons there, not the least of which is that sometimes, we need to “make haste slowly;” that is, sometimes it’s better to be patient with the front end of a process—with plotting a book, for example—so the execution of it goes more smoothly and successfully. I also learned that solving problems with other people is largely a function of taking responsibility for our own thoughts and actions, and that listening has more to do with problem solving than glowing rhetoric does.
My characters occasionally stumble across the same lessons—what a coincidence!

Kim: What influenced your decision to write Regency Romances? What resources do you draw upon for research?
Grace: I’ve been reading Regencies for about forty years, and there are many, many first rate authors with big lists in the Regency sub-genre. I draw upon them, particularly Georgette Heyer for historical detail—but also a lot of online resources, craft books, historical references and the occasional trip to the UK.
Kim: Tell us about your Regency books - are they connected? What inspired your newest release, The Virtuoso?
Grace: With the release of Lady Sophie’s Christmas Wish, in October, and The Virtuoso in November, we have the third and fourth siblings, respectively, in the Windham family series. We have four more siblings to go (that I know of—His Grace was a rascal before Her Grace got her mitts on him) and I’m sure there will be many spin-offs, sequels and pre-quels.
The Virtuoso is the story of a man whose entire identity is wrapped up in his hard won skill as a pianist. My editor occasionally admonishes me to “torture the hero” so, of course, Lord Valentine Windham had to lose access to his music. When his spirits are at their nadir and all he wants to do is lick his emotional and physical wounds, he meets a woman whose troubles make him forget his own because he’s so focused on solving hers.

Kim: What's next for Grace Burrowes?
Grace: Lucky, me! I’m hard at work finishing the Windham siblings’ series—Lady Maggie’s Secret Scandal comes out next May—and in summer 2012, we’ll launch the first in a trilogy of Scottish Victorians.
Mahalo, Grace, for joining us at SOS Aloha! Sourcebooks is giving away two copies of LADY SOPHIE'S CHRISTMAS WISH:
A luminous holiday tale of romance, passion, and dreams come true from rising star Grace Burrowes, whose award-winning Regency romances are capturing hearts worldwide.
All she wants is peace and anonymity…
Lady Sophie Windham has maneuvered a few days to herself at the ducal mansion in London before she must join her family for Christmas in Kent. Suddenly trapped by a London snowstorm, she finds herself with an abandoned baby and only the assistance of a kind, handsome stranger standing between her and complete disaster.
But Sophie’s holiday is about to heat up…
With his estate in ruins, Vim Charpentier sees little to feel festive about this Christmas. His growing attraction for Sophie Windham is the only thing that warms his spirits—but when Sophie’s brothers whisk her away, Vim’s most painful holiday memories are reawakened.
It seems Sophie’s been keeping secrets, and now it will take much more than a mistletoe kiss to make her deepest wishes come true…

| Grace's Holiday Wish .... |

My wish would be to gather ALL the extended family together. Each year there is always someone who can't make it for one reason or another. I wish...
ReplyDeleteMy wish is that the rest of my family will stay healthy and that the next year will be better than this year
ReplyDeleteRight now I think I would like a day off after a full night's sleep
ReplyDeleteI wish for my sister in Florida and her family to come up in Illinois so we could celebrate the holidays with other sister who lives in Illinois.
ReplyDeleteMarybelle, what a wonderful wish. As somebody who's at least 600 miles from my nearest sibling, and 3000 miles from my parents, I'm usually the outlier.
ReplyDeleteDanny, I think good health is always a worthy wish, and as for next year being better... is there anybody who can't get behind that?
Debby, we think alike. A good night's sleep is the sine qua non of a good day for me and has been ever since I became a Mom.
Danielle, if she won't come north, then long about the third week in January, you go south. There ought to be a law about people in Florida having to entertain relatives in the dead of winter.
I just hope next year is better than this year was.
ReplyDeleteMy wish is to get the things that need done early, and then spend the time really enjoying the season...looking at the Christmas lights, listening to the holiday music, and spending time with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteMy Christmas wish is for my son and his family to be able to come over from London and spend the holidays with us. I also wish that he could find a job over here and get to stay permanently as I miss them so very much.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great excerpt and interview, and for this opportunity.

My first wish is that my husband's major surgery next month is successful. Then, for myself, I'd wish a stronger faith, better health, and more willpower. For my loved ones, happiness and health. For Ms. Grace (aka Madam Author) I wish continued success and lots of good ideas for yummy heroes like Vim and Val. (Hello, gentlemen!) I already have this book and it is absolutely wonderful. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteAnd to Kim, you met Alex O'Loughlin? Oh, you lucky girl!
ReplyDeleteI am jealous, Alex O'Loughlin? I also like Scott Caan-loved him on Entourage and Varsity Blues.
ReplyDeleteI have the Heir in my TBR pile and it is moving up. I love to read and would love to win and read this book. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win.
For Christmas I want to make sure that my kids have a great Christmas and get most everything that they want. I want for myself gift cards to buy books and Bath-n-Body to get lotion.
christinebails@yahoo.com
I want to be able to travel with my family and see the world.
ReplyDeleteI want a fairy godmother to do the parts of the holidays that are time consuming (like cleaning house) to leave me more time to enoy getting together with friends and family, trimming the tree, wrapping the gifts (after she has told me what everyone wants lol).
ReplyDeletecatslady
My daughter Clare is reading Grace's series right now and she's loving it!
ReplyDeleteMust wish for good health of friends and family who have faced such challenges during the past year.
ReplyDeleteCatslady's fairy godmother would be a nice, second choice.
I just wish I maake it through December! My two little girls have dec. birthday! YIKES! It will be busy busy! Thanks for sharing today!
ReplyDelete~Johanna
My wish is to find some spirit of the season.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your recent release Grace! I wish some new romance book releases would find their way to my doorstep. :) And I wish I could read these books and they'd review themselves. On a more serious note, I wish that it won't be much of a hassle moving into a new place, especially during the holiday season so that I can break out that Christmas tree and decorations.
ReplyDeleteKim, I would just die if you got to interview The Chairman. If I interviewed him, that's the only way I would address him. lol.
Please don't enter me for the giveaway. I got a nice little surprise when this book showed up in my mailbox. No clue how it got there but the sugar plum fairies came early this year. <3
Linda, that is a SMART wish. I'm guessing the one last year about a cleaning crew of elves didn't pan out so well. Better luck with this one.
ReplyDeleteDiane, maybe grandma will have to hop in her sleigh and jaunt over to Merry Olde this year? Plum pudding anybody? Sing ye wassail? MISTLETOE?! Come on... Expedia's calling your name.
Bonnie, will keep Mr. Bonnie in my thoughts. Medical procedures and the holidays are a tough combination. May he find renewed health under the tree this year.
Christine: From your typing fingers to Santa Claus's ears. Those Barnes and Noble gift cards NEVER EVER expire.
Jane, I love to travel. Love that "adventures await" feeling, and love seeing home through more appreciative eyes. Where's the first place you'd go?
ReplyDeleteCatslady, you don't want a fairy godmother, you want, as Judy Siefert so trenchantly put it almost half a century ago, a WIFE.
LilMissMolly--tell her to send me an SASE (addy on the website) and I'll sign book plates for her for (for anybody) for each book.
Johanna--Oh, tough month! I'm guessing you have your shopping done by Thanksgiving, and that you buy your gift wrap in quantity. But wasn't it nice having a newborn on two different Christmases?
Karen C, my tonic of choice lately has been to encourage other people. When my writing feels stuck, or the sales figures aren't spectacular, blah, blah, I get my priorities brushed up by offering somebody else a pat on the back or thumbs up. Works wonders for my own mood.
Kati, my condolences on having to move in December. That has to be a special challenge, and you DESERVE some cool new books, so we're just going to have to hope you get those gift cards mentioned earlier. In fact, is there any one among up who wouldn't like some gift cards?
Oh Grace. I am never one to turn down gift cards. They help stock my bookshelves with awesome shiny new books.
ReplyDeleteI love your books covers. Just gorgeous. Although, Lady Sophie looks like she was touched up one too many times by Mariah Carey's photoshopper. lol
ALOHA!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post and giveaway! I love this series. I remember buy the Heir on impulse, I just got my Kindle and it was one of my first buys. I loved it and have read the first two books. I'm working on catching up :)
My holiday wish would be to be able to just sit back, relax and read!!! Lately I've been so busy with work, helping to prepare a family member for surgery, getting ready for the holidays.... I haven't been able to read very much and my TBR pile is dangerously high. Plus with generous additions (THANKS Kim!!!! ;) ) I'm waaaay behind. So, that's my wish, a snowstorm that traps me in my house, and cuts off communication, but not power!, so I can park my butt and read :)
My holiday wish would be to travel first class and visit distant places, eating and reading my way through Europe or Australia or similar places!
ReplyDeleteHi Grace,
ReplyDeletemeet you here ;)
Hi Kim,
I wish all my family health, my work is going smooth and God will always blessing us ;)
Hi Kim and Grace! I wish for health, happiness, a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and Christmas with a genie cleanup, great weather for this winter, and sugar plums dancing in our heads.
ReplyDeleteMy wish is to have my family all together and healthy through the holidays .
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving ladies to you ad your families.
Grace I loved The Heir and The Soldier. Looking forward to reading Val's story in The Virtuoso.
