Aloha to Joanne Kennedy and TALL, DARK, AND COWBOY

I was curious who coined the phrase, Tall, Dark, and Handsome.  The closest I found comes from the unflappable Mae West,

“Love thy neighbor -- and if he happens to be tall, debonair and devastating, it will be that much easier.”

Perhaps today's guest can shed some light on Tall, Dark, and Handsome, er, Cowboy.  Please join me in welcoming Joanne Kennedy!

Joanne Kennedy is the author of three previous contemporary Western romances for Sourcebooks. She brings a wide variety of experience, ranging from chicken farming to horse training, to her sexy, spicy cowboy stories. She is a 2011 finalist in the prestigious Romance Writers of American RITA© Awards, for One Fine Cowboy. Joanne lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where she is working on her next book, Cowboy Crazy (June 2012).

Grand Tetons, Wyoming

Kim:  Wyoming! Tell us your favorite sight, sound, and smell.

Joanne:  Sight – I love our wide open spaces. There are so many places in Wyoming where the land seems to go on forever. I especially love it in late summer and fall, when the grass turns gold and glitters in the sun and the sky is a deep, rich blue. Sound – I live near Warren Air Force Base and at 4:30 every afternoon they play the national anthem. I can just barely hear it from my house, so it sounds tinny and old-fashioned and reminds you of all the history that happened here. Smell–I love the smell of sagebrush. If you crush it between your fingers, it has a wonderful spicy, herbal scent that’s pure Wyoming.

Sagebrush

Kim:  I read on your website you’ve held a variety of jobs! What have you learned from horse training, chicken farming, and bridezilla wrangling (at a department store wedding registry) that you can apply to writing?

Joanne:  I didn’t start writing until fairly late in life, but I feel like I spent my whole life preparing for it! In everything I’ve done, I’ve noticed little details and out-of-the-way facts I can add to make a story richer. Having done these things, I can set the stage in a way that makes the reader feel like they’re living that life. I love it when books do that for me and I hope I do it for my readers.

F22s arrive in Hawaii

Kim:  The retired fighter pilot - does he inspire any traits for your cowboy characters?

Joanne:  He inspires everything! He’s the best person I know and the reason I write romance.

Kim:  Tell us about your new book, TALL, DARK, AND COWBOY.

Joanne:  At its heart, the book is about starting over. Lacey is a former trophy wife who swears off her ex’s ill-gotten gains and flees to Wyoming with nothing but the old beat-up car she had in high school. She’s hoping for help from her old friend Chase Caldwell who moved there when his family lost their farm. Chase isn’t about to hand over his life to the woman who broke his heart years ago, but the chemistry between them is hotter than ever. When her ex’s criminal cronies catch up with her, she needs help—and Chase can’t resist a damsel in genuine distress.

Kim:  What's next for Joanne Kennedy?

Joanne:  I just finished a new book that will be released in Spring of 2012. It’s called Cowboy Crazy and it’s about a city girl and a rodeo cowboy. I’m a huge rodeo fan and did a lot of behind-the-chutes research for it, so it was a blast to write. Plus it stars my hottest hero ever!

And I’m working on another cowboy story. I’ll keep the cowboys coming as long as readers want to keep reading about them. I’m so grateful that the world I know and love is one that readers enjoy!

McGarrett on horseback

Mahalo, Joanne, for visiting SOS Aloha.  You are always welcome in Hawaii to the paniolos in paradise.   Sourcebooks is giving away two copies of TALL, DARK AND COWBOY, now available in stores and online:

She’s looking for an old friend…

In the wake of a nasty divorce, Lacey Bradford heads for Wyoming where she’s sure her old friend will take her in. But her high school pal Chase Caldwell is no longer the gangly boy who would follow her anywhere. For one thing, he’s now incredibly buff and handsome, but that’s not all that’s changed…

What she finds is one hot cowboy…

Chase has been through tough times and is less than thrilled to see the girl who once broke his heart. But try as he might to resist her, while Lacey’s putting her life back together, he’s finding new ways to be part of it.

To enter the giveaway,

1.  Leave a comment about cowboys - who is your favorite cowboy from real life or the movie screen?

2.  Sourcebooks' giveaway is open to US residents only.   For our international readers, I am giving away a "cowboy souvenir" from Kualoa Ranch.

  2. Great interview, thank you for sharing. I just love a good cowboy romance, and her books sounds intriguing. My favorite western movies is "Good Day to Die" (1995) starring Sidney Poitier, Billy Wirth, Joanna Going... One of the best movies I have ever seen.

  3. Hondo has always been my favorite cowboy. John Wayne starred in the movie but the book is so much better.

  4. I have to say that I love Joanne's books! My favorite cowboy -- um um tough one but I would say Rowdy Yates from Rawhide!

  5. I love Cowboy books. You really can't go wrong with a cowboy hero. I think the first cowboy I remember hearing or seeing when i was a kid was John Wayne and when I think of cowboys on the big screen he's the first one that pops in my head.

  6. Never had a chance to meet a real cowboy (sigh), but, for fictional ones, have to go with a whole passel--the Cartwrights of Bonanza.

    A tribute I thought you'd appreciate:

  8. Loved this interview! I remember my sister loved John Wayne movies, so he was the first cowboy I can recall. Since then I've enjoyed cowboy stories, westerns, etc. Wyoming is a great setting for a cowboy movie too...wide beautiful open spaces.

  9. Hi Joanne! Congrats on your recent release.

As a child, I watched AMC and Turner Movie Classics. The Duke was my first cowboy. He was so tough and he would always win. :) And when I was younger, I used to have a crush on Ty Murray, Jewel's husband. lol. Something about those rodeo cowboys and probably the fact that I'm a Texas girl. And that Daniel Craig in Cowboys and Aliens was a doozy. :) Oh! Can't forget the singing cowboy Gene Autry.

  10. First of all, thank you Kim for having me, and for taking the time to read and review my book! And I love the things you added to the post - the Mae West quote and the pictures (F22s are sexy!) I'm very excited to be here!

  11. Desere, Kim added so much to the post with the pictures. And I agree - I want to see the cowboy souvenir too! You can't have too many cowboys:)
Thanks for falling for my books - I love knowing there are people like you out there waiting for the next cowboy!

  12. Natalija, I have never seen that movie. I'm going to have to try to find it - thanks for the recommendation!

Debby, it always seems to me that the book is better than the movie. I guess it's hard to get everything into a two-hour screenplay. I had a movie producer looking at my first book, "Cowboy Trouble" for a while. It didn't work out, but it was fun trying to figure out how they'd do it!

Danielle - yay! My vote goes to Rowdy Yates too. I love Clint Eastwood, and he's not quite so scary and tough in that part. He exemplifies that long, lean, craggy cowboy look I love!

  13. Mary, thanks for stopping by! I agree, you can't go wrong with a cowboy.

Maria, oooh - Clint Walker and Steve McQueen! You guys are coming up with a great assortment of cowboys.

Linda, I've lived in a few places out West, including Montana and Colorado, but Wyoming is my favorite. It really is beautiful here, and truly all about cowboys!

Kati, I love rodeo cowboys too. My next book, Cowboy Crazy, comes out in June and features my hottest cowboy yet - he's a bull rider. It was a fun book to research because I got to get out and meet lots of cowboys and hang out behind the chutes at our Frontier Days rodeo!

I like Ty Murray too. Jewel wrote a little story about their romance that I found on line. I think it was at The Boot, a country music site. It was very touching and made me like him as a person as well as a cowboy.

I'll be checking in all day, seeing what other cowboys you all can come up with. So far, I really like this blog community!

  26. As a youngster I loved Roy Rogers and even got to meet him in person when I was newly married and a first time Mom. But I have to say that Clint Walker from the TV show Cheyanne was a whole different matter. To me he was my favorite . :)Looking forward to read Joanne's last and latest Cowboy stories. Thanks ladies for the chance.

  28. Hi, Kim! I thought of one more very important cowboy: James Arness as Marshall Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke.
