Aloha to Jillian Stone and AN AFFAIR WITH MR. KENNEDY

It was a historical weekend for me.

- I finished debut author Jillian Stone's AN AFFAIR WITH MR. KENNEDY, set in 1887 London.  It is the first book in The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard series and today is its release!

- I watched SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS, set in 1891 Europe.

- I watched DOWNTON ABBEY, set in a country estate during WWI.

These stories spanned over thirty years as they shared one common theme - change. The good, the bad, and the violent. Kicking off the change is AN AFFAIR WITH MR, KENNEDY:

London, 1887. Part stoic gentleman, part fearless Yard man, Zeno “Zak” Kennedy is an enigma of the first order. For years, the memory of a deadly bombing at King’s Cross has haunted the brilliant Scotland Yard detective. His investigation has zeroed in on a ring of aristocratic rebels whose bloody campaign for Irish revolution is terrorizing the city. When he discovers one of the treacherous lords is acquainted with his free-spirited new tenant, Cassandra St. Cloud, his inquiry pulls him unexpectedly close to the heart of the conspiracy—and into the arms of a most intriguing lady.

Cassie is no Victorian prude. An impressionist painter with very modern ideas about life and love, she is eager for a romantic escapade that is daring and discreet. She sets her sights on her dour but handsome landlord, but after she learns their meeting was not purely accidental, she hardly has a chance to forgive her lover before their passionate affair catapults them both into a perilous adventure.

Mary Cassatt's TEA

Victorian Society enjoys modern conveniences and modern ideas ... yet struggles with poverty and anarchism.   Jillian Stone delivers a compelling romance that spans several genres - historical, suspense, and even a hint of steampunk.    Read my review on Goodreads at this link.

Mary Cassat's IN THE BOX

Jillian herself is equally compelling.  From her interview with RT Bookreviews (at this link),

Regency seemed like a crowded field (filled with very talented writers). And I didn't want to write about dukes and earls who sit around in gentlemen's clubs and make wagers. I began to notice that a few romance authors were writing in the Victorian period. I was particularly drawn to Amanda Quick's novels, which were historical romance but incorporated mystery, suspense and occult elements. Then I got to thinking about Scotland Yard detectives. It seemed to me that Yard men were always portrayed as bumbling inspectors, five moves behind Sherlock Holmes. So I thought, what if there was an elite group of detectives? I began to do some research and found out that there was a division of Scotland Yard created in the 1882 called Special Branch. I added a dash (as in dashing) of James Bond Steampunk and that was the start of The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard. The heroines in the series are fascinating, progressive Victorian women: an Impressionist painter, an industrialist and a ballerina/jewel thief/spy!

  1. This book sounds wonderful! I do not think I could live without my modern shower. Tub baths are soo nice but co much work. I would have to be born into a family of money to make it easy on me bu then it tough on the working class.

  2. For me it would be a cell phone. I think I've gotten so used to carrying it around with me. Unless years ago when we were out we had to find a phone booth to make a call or wait until you got home.

  3. Great post. LOVE the cover of this book! Modern amenities...hmmm. I'd have to say I couldn't live without the local Starbucks. Sure, they had coffee houses back in the day, but not like our modern ones which feature every coffee combo under the sun and, oh my gosh, cranberry bliss bars during the holidays. Yum!

Didn't you just love Sherlock Holmes, Kim? I think the set artists do SUCH a wonderful job recreating London during the late 19th century. Every time the camera goes panoramic, my mouth falls open.

  4. The one thing that I couldn't live without would have to be "a flushing toilet". I can't to think about doing my business in a chamber pot or outhouse...UGH!!!

Enjoyed the post and love the cover model. He's the same cover model from Shana Galen's book "Lord and Lady Spy".

I found the excerpt quite intriguing. I normally read Regency romances, but would love to have a chance at reading Victorian romances as they seem to be coming "into vogue" now.

  6. Thanks for the great post and giveaway! I've had book lust for this title for a while now. I love the cover and the premise!

Ummm... I couldn't live without modern plumbing. I could adjust to no internet or Kindle but not a flushable toilet or running water. Ummm... I wouldn't want to live in the past. As an asian woman, my options wouldn't be great.

  7. I have not watched the latest Sherlock Holmes movie yet, but it's on the list! As for a modern convenience, I'd have to say the microwave.

  8. Modern plumbing would be something I could not live without. I lived in West Virginia for a year when I was 18 and in some places out in the woods some people still had outhouses..I couldn't believe it, but that was over 20 years ago, I hope they have an indoor bathroom now.

  9. I would have to say plumbing for sure. Have to have a shower and toliet, very much a necessity.
I would also say I could not live without books either, but the shower is my for sure answer.
The cover model for this book is also on Lord & Lady Spy by Shana Galen(if not, it sure looks a lot like him).
This book looks great and would love to win and read. Also love the cover. Very gorgeous couple. Thanks for the chance to win.

  13. First of all I must say that I truly love the cover on this book. I don't know what it is, just, something. The placement of his hand on her hip; the steely look in his eyes as he stares right at me. Awesome!

The modern convenience I couldn't live without, that's an easy question today Kim: The ever wonderful, hard working, must have washing machine.

  15. Since today is the official release day for An Affair with Mr. Kennedy things are pretty hectic, but I wanted to stop by and say aloha! Thank you all for leaving a comment, and a big thank you to Kim for hosting this wonderful blog as well as her review!

I noticed that quite a few of you were concerned about plumbing and I wanted to assure you that if you lived in late Victorian London (next door to Mr. Kennedy) you would enjoy all the modern amenities including a water closet, as well as hot water for baths!

As for me, the one modern convenience I could not give up would be my laptop computer. With all the books I have yet to write, I think I'd cry if I had to go back to using a typewriter and white out!

  18. The first thing that came to mind is indoor plumbing, primarily a flushing toilet - so it's good to hear those type of amenities were available. Given that, I sure would miss my computer.

Congratulations on the release of An Affair With Mr. Kennedy - how very exciting. Would love to read it.

  19. A refrigerator is top on my list. I know they had ice boxes but I doubt they kept food fresh very long. I would be very grouchy if I didn't have my dishwasher. Of course, if you had enough money you had a servant do that for you.

I couldn't live without my computer. I guess I would have to spend my time reading more books.

  22. I love my washing machine. I have at least one full load every day. I could not imagine having to do all the laundry by hand every day. It's a hassle now for the few delicates I wash by hand.

  23. I would agree with those who mentioned modern plumbing. I can't imagine living without that convenience. I also can't live without my TV or computer for entertainment purposes and information.
