Aloha to Sabrina Jeffries and A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS

On this day in 1890, Nellie Bly completed her round the world journey in 72 days.   I wonder if she experienced the same adventures of Sabrina Jeffries, albeit a hundred years apart.  From Sabrina's bio,

If having a colorful life turns you into a novelist, then I had no choice but to become a writer. My whole life changed when my parents decided to be missionaries to Thailand (when I was seven). Before I was eighteen, I’d eaten chicken heads and jellyfish, been chased by a baby elephant, seen countless cobras and pythons, had the entire series of rabies shots (yes, the ones in the stomach with those lo-o-o-ng needles) and played in rain forests and rubber plantations.

Likewise, Sabrina's new release, A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS, might be an apt title for Nellie Bly - she discarded traditional topics for female writers such as fashion and gardening.   Instead, Nellie reported on female factory workers, served as a foreign correspondent in Mexico, an entered an insane asylum undercover.

A Regency Lady
(Countess of Blessington)

Alas, Sabrina's Lady Celia didn't take such drastic measures, but she does challenge society, her Gran, and even Mr. Pinter in A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS:

With two months left to find a husband to fulfill her grandmother’s ultimatum, Lady Celia Sharpe sets her sights on three eligible bachelors. Becoming betrothed to one of these wealthy, high-ranking men will surely prove her capable of getting married, so hopefully the wedding itself won’t be necessary for Celia and her siblings to receive their inheritance. Step two of her audacious plan is hiring the dangerously compelling Bow Street Runner Jackson Pinter to investigate the three men she’s chosen. But with Lady Celia bedeviling Jackson’s days and nights, the last thing he wants is to help her find a husband. And when she recalls shadowed memories that lead his investigation into her parents’ mysterious deaths in a new direction—putting her in danger—Jackson realizes the only man he wants Celia to marry is himself!

A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS is book five in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series.  While I was sad for the series to end, Sabrina hints that we'll see a familiar character, Pierce Waverly, in the near future.  Check out my review of A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS at this link.

  1. Congrats to Sabrina on the new release. I love this series and can't wait to learn more about Pinter. They have sleepovers at the Museum of Natural History for the kids, too. I wish I could experience that.

  6. can't say I'm overly adventurous (certainly couldn't compete with Sabrina or Nellie) the most adventurous thing I've prob done would be moving away after college to a big city (I grew up in a small town & went to college in another) hours from home & where I didn't know a single person, had only visited briefly once to start a new job & my "adult" life. was both exciting & a little nerve wracking at the same time.

  8. Congrats on the new release! As for an adventure, a couple years ago on vacation I convinced my husband to go with me on a swim with the sharks. (not the cage kind, just snorkeling with them). They were black tipped reef sharks and lemon sharks...not scary ones. It was really cool. There were quite a few of them swimming around, but it was never scary.

  9. Congrats on the new release Sabrina. I love the Hellions series. My favs were How to Woo and To Wed a Wild Lord. Love the others but those were my favos. I love Mr Pinter and can't wait to find out what happens with him and Celis.
My best adventure is motherhood. I have never wanted kids and am so glad that I changed my mind. I have a daughter-9 and a son-6. They are my world and make me a better person for being their mommy. My son has autism and is a handful. Since he has started school he has started talking more and interacting with others. He has improved so much in the past 4 years. My daughter is an avid reader and am so proud of her because of it. I love my kids and thank god for them everyday.

  10. I can't wait to read this book! I'm anxiously waiting for it since I've read the last one. My biggest adventure was going alone to a strange country without really knowing what to expect there.

  13. Thanks for a fantastic post and giveaway! I've had book lust for this series and I've really, really wanted to read this author!!!

When I was 17, I was chose to be an exchange student to Israel for about 6 weeks. It was awesome. It was the first time I had ever been away from home and it definitely started my love of traveling (yes, I even love to fly). Plus, Israel is such an awesome place to visit. Full of history and for such a small country, there is a lot to see! I'm definitely going to go back someday!

  14. I love Sabrina's books and the Hellions are one of her best series. I am so looking forward to reading A Lady Never Surrenders.

In 2001 I was so very lucky to visit England and Scotland with my sister and cousin. It was 14 days of fast pace running to see all that we could. Don't think I will ever have another exciting trip as this was.

  15. I am so looking forward to reading this book. Thanks for the giveaway.

Years ago, when I was in college, a student group traveled to New York City for a convention. Our hotel reservation began in the early afternoon, but we arrived late the previous night. We dropped our bags off and had a bit of adventure roaming the streets and subways of NYC for hours until we could get into the hotel. Remember, when you're young, sleep is optional!

  16. I love Sabrina Jeffries' books! And the Hellions series is great. Although I am eager to read this last book, I am sorry to see the series end. Although with Ms. Jeffries' style, I am sure there will be a new series spin-off.

As far as adventures go, I have not really had anything that I would classify as an adventure. I have lead a very quiet, peaceful life for the most part. I hope to soon conquer my anxieties of crowds so that I can go on adventures to conferences, lol.

  17. My biggest adventure was exploring the island of Maui in 1983.

    I enjoy Sabrina's books.

  18. I think one of my adventures was when we took a carribbean cruise and took a trip up to The Citadell in Haiti. We drove for an hour over dirt roads and then took a horse ride up a mountain - I don't ride but what the heck. Going up was fine - we were up in the clouds and it was quite a sight. Going down was a problem. The guides (who were speaking Spanish I guess) made me switch horses. I assumed there was something wrong with my horse (but they were laughing). Shortly after my horse fell!!! I could have fallen off a cliff or broken something. Luckily I ended up with just a cut in my arm pit (not fun in hot weather but could have been worse lol).

  19. I love Sabrina's books. She is one of my most favorite writers! One of my biggest adventures was going repelling as a college student. I had a professor in her fifties (ancient in my eyes) who bounced to the top of the wall and be-bopped her way down repelling like it was nothing. I thought if she can do it; I can do it. Much to my chagrin, once they got me over the edge of the cliff, my knees were shaking so badly that they had to pull me back up. I sat on top of that cliff shaking and feeling like an idiot before one of the ROTC students came over and talked with me for a half hour calming me down. I realized that going down the way I got up without a rope was worse than going over the cliff with one. I chose the latter. However, once I was down, I have NEVER gone repelling again. I also have a great respect for anyone brave enough to deal with heights.

This book sounds very good. Thanks for the giveaway.

  22. I've had a couple of adventures that have been scary and lots of fun. My next adventure will be to travel with my husband in a Kenworth truck as he delivers freight across the country; a fairly large adjustment!!

  23. Congrats on your new release! I can't wait to read Jackson Pinter's HEA.

When I was 21, I decided to spend three weeks in Europe, mostly by myself because my overly studious friends refused to come along. I learned to ask "do you speak English" in various languages (French, Spanish, and German).

  27. I think raising my children has been an adventure but also walking the trail at Rickett's Glen here in Pennsylvania was quite an adventure since some parts are just slippery rocks along water falls.

  28. I love Sabrina's books! I have really enjoyed her series, The Hellions of Halstead Hall, and hate to see it end. However, we will finally have an answer about what happened to their parents. I have been waiting for A Lady Never Surrenders for the last month.

I think that my greatest adventure was when my husband and I flew to Las Vegas to see his family on our 5th Anniversary. I had never been on a plane before and am terribly afraid of heights. Not realizing how panicky I would get, my DH let me have the window seat, which he usually prefers. After several drinks, a lot of Kleenex shredding, and a change of seats, we got there. Am still afraid of heights, but don't mind airplanes anymore.

  29. Right before Halloween I moved from Chicago to Seattle. I drove a 16ft long moving truck that was pulling a car trailer. I have never driven anything that big before. I have also never driven over 2000 miles before. It took 5 days and an ungodly amount of gas but I made it to my new home. I surprised myself with being able to handle all of the bumps in the road, both real and metaphorical.
