A California native, graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in Economics. After college, she moved to Los Angeles and worked as a financial writer and hedge fund analyst but always dreamed of becoming a women's fiction author. Utilizing her experiences, she writes stories that are witty, heartwarming and relatable to the modern woman.
Kim: Aloha, California native! What is your favorite sight, smell, and sound of the Golden State?
Kimberly: My favorite sight is a nice sunset in Laguna Beach and/or Huntington Beach. I love when the sky turns a fiery orange and pink. The sight of surfers sitting out in the ocean waiting for sets is nice too. It's incredibly calming. I love the smell of the salty and briny ocean early in the morning. And of course, the sound of the waves and my friends and family laughing are also my favorite.
Kim: Who are some women's fiction authors you admire or shaped how you write?
Kimberly: My favorite women's fiction author is Emily Giffin. I just love what she stands for in terms of representing chick-lit in an intelligent, relevant and contemporary manner. Also her books have always been page-turners for me. She's someone I admire very much.
Kim: How would you describe today's "modern woman"?
Kimberly: Today's modern woman reads Minted Magazine! Just kidding. Well, not entirely. Today's modern woman is quite complex and I think that's the perfect word to describe her. The complexity is what I try to capture in all my work; the fact that women are charged with the double pursuit of career and family and the challenges that creates. I also think of the word "leverage." More than ever, women are educated and independent and with that brings the ability to not settle.
Kim: Tell us about RECESSION PROOF!
Kimberly: Recession Proof pretty much captures what I just described above about the modern woman. The story follows Helen who is a girl on the brink of turning 30 and in a relationship where nothing is glaringly right or wrong, but in her heart she knows she settling. She's also in a career that she has chosen out of practicality but makes her a little short of miserable. Her life is somewhat on auto-pilot when the recession hits and she loses her job. She's then faced with the idea of going for it in life and what it means to be fulfilled and never settle. But "sometimes going after what you want will be hardest thing you ever do..."
Kim: What's next for Kimberly S. Lin?
Kimberly: I'm currently the Co-Founder and Publisher of Minted Magazine, an online magazine that focuses on empowering women in their careers and lives. And the Spring Issue should be live by the time this blog post goes up. I am also "attempting" to complete my second novel and get it published by Fall 2012. We'll see!

i think modern woman is super woman, they can do all man can do and woman is more powerful then man ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that today's modern women can make choices that make them happy and they don't have to settle!
ReplyDeleteSince we’re feeling nostalgic, how about Helen Reddy’s 1970s anthem, I Am Woman:
ReplyDeleteI am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back and pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Thanks for the post, Kim. No need to enter me in today's contest.
A modern woman for me is confident, secure and independent. By confident I mean she knows her own strengths and weaknesses. A song that comes to mind is I'm Every Woman by Chaka Khan.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think that today's modern woman has more choices than we had.
ReplyDeleteA modern woman doesn't depend on a man.
ReplyDeleteI feel a modern woman should be aggressive without being called a b****
ReplyDeleteA modern woman can stand on her own two feet without having to rely on anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI'm a librarian and I haven't heard of Minted Magazine. I'll have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteI think a "Modern Woman" today looks anyway she wants to look. She's not pigeon-holed into conforming to one look, one attitude, one style.
LSUReader got the song I was thinking about. Things are much improved but I don't think we are there just yet.
