Aloha to Regina O'Melveny and THE BOOK OF MADNESS AND CURES

Today we have a special treat in historical fiction - please meet Regina O'Melveny!  From her bio,

REGINA O’MELVENY is a writer, teacher and assemblage artist. Her award-winning poetry and prose have been anthologized and widely published in literary magazines such as The Bellingham Review, rattapallax, The Sun, The LA Weekly, Solo and Barrow Street.

She teaches at Marymount College and lives with her husband near the Los Angeles harbor, where she can watch the blue transit of ships.

Regina is celebrating the release of THE BOOK OF MADNESS AND CURES:

Dr. Gabriella Mondini, a strong-willed, young Venetian woman, has followed her father in the path of medicine. She possesses a singleminded passion for the art of physick, even though, in 1590, the male-dominated establishment is reluctant to accept a woman doctor. So when her father disappears on a mysterious journey, Gabriella's own status in the Venetian medical society is threatened. Her father has left clues--beautiful, thoughtful, sometimes torrid, and often enigmatic letters from his travels as he researches his vast encyclopedia, The Book of Diseases.

After ten years of missing his kindness, insight, and guidance, Gabriella decides to set off on a quest to find him--a daunting journey that will take her through great university cities, centers of medicine, and remote villages across Europe. Despite setbacks, wary strangers, and the menaces of the road, the young doctor bravely follows the clues to her lost father, all while taking notes on maladies and treating the ill to supplement her own work.

Gorgeous and brilliantly written, and filled with details about science, medicine, food, and madness, THE BOOK OF MADNESS AND CURES is an unforgettable debut.

  3. Congrats Regina on your Debut. Sounds like an interesting and intriguing read. Would love to read it. One cure that works for me is the chewing of Fennel after eating spicy foods to prevent heartburn. It has a licorice/anise taste and it does help with indigestion. Thanks for the opportunity.

  11. Thanks for a fun giveaway! This book sounds very interesting....

I'd have to say that my cure all is... sleep! Whenever I'm feeling draggy or feel a cold coming on, I try and go to bed earlier. Rest and sleep seem to "cure" me the best :)

  15. Nothing like a hot bath (with your choice of salts, bubbles, oils, etc.) to soothe an aching RA body. While enjoying your favorite read, of course!

Hot green tea or herbal tea on a cold winter's night. Oh heck, I just plain like hot tea all the time and it's good for you! Add a dash of LOCAL honey to enhance your immune system.

Music. When I find myself in an ugly mood, I put on a type of music that I know will change my frame of mind. Usually, it's foot-stomping, butt-shaking country! Sweat that ugliness right outta me - LOL!

  22. Apple juice. I have photographic evidence that I have been invoking this "cure" since before I could talk; there are photos of a toddler me sucking on a bottle full of apple juice my mom had given to me when I was crying my eyes out and wouldn't be comforted! I still feel such a sense of peace when I drink it, which I do when I'm sad, lonely, depressed, etc. Just something about the cinnamony, autumny smell that gets me every time.
