Aloha to Catherine Mann and UNDER FIRE

Last Friday was Military Spouses' Appreciation Day.   Yesterday was Mother's Day.  Today kicks off Military Appreciation Week.   All three apply to Catherine Mann - writer, teacher, flyboy's spouse, and Coastie's mom.

Catherine joins me for a cozy chat to celebrate the release of UNDER FIRE - the third book in the ELITE FORCE series.

Kim:  "After nine moves in twenty years" ... other than your current beachside locale, what was your favorite place to live? What would you have missed if you had not become a military spouse?

Catherine:  We have fond memories from each place. But we absolutely loved living in Louisiana – Mardi Gras, the food, and most of all the people. We made amazing friends and memories during our four years my husband was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. As for what I would have missed most if our lives had taken a different path? I would have missed all the friends we made. To this day, we keep in touch with many of our military friends from around the world. While it’s exciting to live in new places, it’s the people that make anywhere special.

Kim:  Where do you display your RITA award and other accolades?

Catherine:  My RITA statue stays in my office and I have a few covers framed, hanging on the walls around the house. When we evacuated for Hurricane Ivan, one of my kids gave “RITA” her own seat in the car with a seatbelt.

Kim:  I've enjoyed reading your current series, ELITE FORCE, with Pararescuemen (and animals). You deliver the military hero while still thinking outside the box. What inspired you to write about pararescuemen? What have learned through research about them?

Catherine:  Wow! Thank you, Kim! Early in my days writing the Wingmen Warriors series, I had a heroine pilot who fell in love with a pararescueman. I was thrilled when Sourcebooks offered the opportunity to showcase these unsung heroes. The research on this career field is boundless. I learn new things every time I research a new plotline. The fact that still amazes me most? There are only approximately 350 pararescuemen. Talk about elite of the elite. That number is mind blowing to me.

Kim:  Tell us about UNDER FIRE - what distinguishes the hero and heroine?

Catherine:  Liam and Rachel’s story focuses on one of the most pervasive issues of military life – how to make relationships work given all the demands of the career. Liam is a three-time failure in the marriage department and Rachel lost her military fiancĂ©. They have hefty hurdles to overcome in finding a happily ever after.

Kim:  What's next for Catherine Mann?

Catherine:  Thanks for asking! I have a wonderfully packed release schedule ahead, all with a military or secret agent hero.

UNDER FIRE BY CATHERINE MANN – IN STORES MAY 2012

“Riveting action, to–die–for heroes!”—Suzanne Brockman, New York Times Bestselling Author

No Holds Barred, In Love or War...

A decorated hero, pararescueman Liam McCabe lives to serve. Six months ago, her and Rachel Flores met in the horrific aftermath of an earthquake in the Bahamas. They were tempted by an explosive attraction, but then they parted ways. Still, Liam has thought about Rachel every day—and night—since.

Now, after ignoring all his phone calls for six month, Rachel has turned up on base with a wild story about a high–ranking military traitor. She claims no one but Liam can help her—and she won't trust anyone else.

With nothing but her word and the testimony of a discharged military cop to go on, Liam would be insane to risk his career—even his life— to help a woman who left him in the dust.

  1. Congrats to Catherine on the new release. It's nice that Liam finally has his HEA. One of my favorite movies is "A Few Good Men." I'm also a fan of the HBO miniseries "A Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific."

  4. Thanks for the great interview and post! Congrats Catherine on the new release! I lived near Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE for a long, long time and it was always so neat to see all of the military planes. They also had air shows and we could see the Blue Angels flying from our house! On a funny note, one of the runways is right next to a major road. When a plane is landing, it's so low, you feel like you can reach up and touch the planes. Kinda spooky if you don't expect it!

  5. :::Howdy!::: Sorry to log on so late - was doing the whole "mom" gig this morning. Daughter's ride to school got in a wreck (no one hurt, thank heaven!) Then doctor appointments, followed by vet appointments. I need a clone, lol! ;)

Many thanks to everyone for the lovely compliments for my work - and for taking the time to check out the interview. And a huge thanks to Kim for running this blog! Kim, you're amazing!!

  6. Love Catherine's books. Thanks for an international giveaway - we Canadian readers appreciate this very much. My brother was in the army years ago, did a tour with peace keeping forces in Cypress. I was glad it was a peaceful time when he was there and wasn't too dangerous. We wrote him often, and I still remember he told us the biggest hit with his army buddies was the pic we sent of our sis and her friend posed in their halloween costumes dressed as harem girls. LOL He said that pic was passed around and eventually "disappeared"

  7. Hi1 Great interview, love to read on what Catherine and her family has been doing and all her moving around the last 20yrs.and her family activities...I love all her books, since my cousin was a marine in the Viet Nam war I sent care packages to him and others. He's a minister so he has been going over to Iraq and has me making up care packages of goodies to all the soldiers..its my way of giving back. I took 2 young soldiers out to lunch yesterday since they are home on leave and friends of my sons..they are hero's. Bobby is in the army and Marshall is in the navy, they sure have become strong and brave young men. I couldn't be more prouder of them, we all are-my son has known them since 3rd. grade...I losted a cousin and many friends in the Viet Nam war, so its important for me to do something for all these men and women who are fighting for our freedom..thanks for the interview and love to win this book!

  9. We always have Navy events here in San Diego. Lots of ships in the harbor, happy homecomings, sad goodbyes when the ships leave, air shows, etc. In Coronado they have the Navy Seals training area, and a bit up north we have the Marine Base (Camp Pendelton) so there always seems to be some form of military happenings around town.

  10. Great interview! I love Catherine's books. I have seen air shows where the Blue Angels appeared.

I really admire people who have served/serving in the military both past and present. My husband served in the Viet Nam war.

  11. Back in 1991 my little Oklahoma town was nearly destroyed by a tornado. The National Guard came in to help us clear the debris. We were able to repair the damage to our school in 4 months. We couldn't have done it without the help of those men and women.

  13. I live in las vegas near the Nellis Air Force base and see the planes, helicopters ect. fly over whenever they are out flying around during red flag exercises.

  14. I really appreciate the service all the men & women who have served our country. I can't really think of any military action event that I have seen, so I would have to go with TV/films and say I love shows like NCIS, The Unit, and movies like A Few Good Men.

  15. Congratulations on the new release.
I can't even begin to describe all the military exposure I've had. My dad is retired USAF, I was in AF-ROTC, my first husband was USAF. I was in Kindergarten @ AFB, grew up next to a Naval Training Center, Married in a USAF Chapel. And I now live near an Air Reserve Base. The sad thing about these 3 bases is that they are all closed. McCoy AFB, Navel Training Center in Orlando and Chanute AFB.
The mission that touched my life the most is when Hurricane Andrew wiped out Southern Miami-Dade County. The National Guard, Reservists, Active Duty and DMAT were all dispatched to help feed, shelter, secure and provide medical assistance to those who were impacted the worst. I was proud to see the Flags flying from their vehicles and encampments. Although Homestead AFB was almost destroyed, the military focused on the entire community, not just "their own".
It was heart warming to see these young men and women show such compassion and care to members of the diverse communities that make up Southern Miami-Dade.

  16. I've probably heard more about it from my dad who was in War World II and both my in-laws. My husband was in Vietnam and I was with him while he was stationed in Mississippi. I got to visit Hickam while in Hawaii visiting his dad. I enjoy many military movies and books and have enjoyed Catherine's books.

  17. I would have to say Army. My father is retired from the Army. I married my hubby when he was an MP at West Point. We lived there for a bit after we married.

  22. When we had the massive floods in 2011, the military were phenomenal. All day we would have low flying helicopters ferrying troops & equipment down to the lower valley.

Sadly & horifically, the helicopters flying back up carried the bodies.

  23. Catherine is a new author for me. I have not read any of her books, but she sure has some beautiful covers. I am a big supporter for our troops. I have family and friends in the serivces. I love reading books about miltary backgrounds. One that I really loved is Seal of my Dreams. Written by a bunch of different authors. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  24. When my son was in middle school they had a civil war day and the VFW had a table where they showed the kids how to fold the flag and take care of it. There were two men and a woman who were elderly. I thought it was such a cool thing to see the kid interacting with them. I haven't seen current troop members in action but I've seen a lot of veterans helping out in the community, and always love talking with them. They gave so much of their lives, and STILL give to the community even when they don't have to.

  30. I just love the covers on Catherine's books. She is very fortunate with the art department!

I like all the military action movies. The newest one, with actual Navy SEALS, ACT OF VALOR, I suggest everyone should see! It brings the sacrifice closer to home for those who haven't experienced first hand.

Yep, have a bit of first hand knowledge and experience of military life up close and personal. Hubs and I are both USMC Veterans. Hmmm, does it count if both Sons-in-law are vets too? One National Guard Enlisted and the other Naval Officer? Both saw plenty of action.

    God Bless all our Military.

  33. Wow! I got distracted by all of those awesome pictures! Great interview. These books sound wonderful!
I have seen them in parades and at fairs. Having 2 siblings in the military, I have seen them running drills as well. They always make me smile. They are so brave and courageous for doing what they do.
I have also watched countless movies but my favorite is Saving Private Ryan.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this series. :)
