Aloha to Roberta Rich and THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE

A realist, in Venice, would become a romantic by mere faithfulness to what he saw before him. - Arthur Symons

I have had the pleasure of visiting Venice once - it is a romantic city.  Yet debut author Roberta Rich was inspired by less romantic view.  From her website (at this link),

Four years ago, she and her husband, Ken, were touring Venice when inspiration struck. “We were on a walking tour of the Jewish ghetto, which, if you haven’t seen it for yourself, is like a movie set of narrow, dark buildings and several synagogues, tucked away on second and third floors, out of view,” she said.

“Walking up the staircases and through musty passages and narrow streets strung with drying laundry, I began to wonder what life must have been for Jews who flocked to the ghetto as one of the few safe havens available at the time,” she added. With these ideas racing through her mind, Rich thought she had the makings of a novel. “I started thinking about my characters and a plot almost immediately after visiting the ghetto,” she recalled.

THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE offers a broader perspective of European history through the eyes of a Jewish midwife:

Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for her gift at coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers—a gift aided by the secret “birthing spoons” she designed. But when a count implores her to attend to his wife, who has been laboring for days to give birth to their firstborn son, Hannah is torn. A Papal edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but the payment he offers is enough to ransom her beloved husband, Isaac, who has been captured at sea. Can Hannah refuse her duty to a suffering woman? Hannah’s choice entangles her in a treacherous family rivalry that endangers the baby and threatens her voyage to Malta, where Isaac, believing her dead in the plague, is preparing to buy his passage to a new life. Not since The Red Tent or People of the Book has a novel transported readers so intimately into the complex lives of women centuries ago or so richly into a story of intrigue that transcends the boundaries of history.

  2. Ah Venice. No, I have never been, but for many years I lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida which is nick named "The Venice of America". I would love to visit the real Venice. The city is so rich in history and beautiful to see. I would order a carmel mocha if I stopped at a cafe there.

  5. I've never been to Venice either, and this is one thing that I do intend to rectify. It's on my "bucket list" of things to do. I've been to Rome and, for the life of me, cannot understand why we never made the journey to Venice. I had no idea that Fort Lauderdale is nick named "The Venice of America". I only live 30 minutes away from there too.

  7. Going on a gondola ride in Venice is on my want to do list. It seems like the thing to do there and I see it in so many film. If I were to visit a cafe there I would ask for the local special or something that everyone gets and ask why. I would be interested in the story behind the food.

  8. Never been to Venice, but I definitely want to go for a gondola ride. In the movie "Chasing Liberty" with Mandy Moore, the hero and heroine hide out in a gondola and the kind-hearted gondolier lets them stay over at his place when he hears they are penniless newlyweds. Yes, very romantic and idealized, but is that not Venice? :)

  11. Never made Venice, as the Russian invasion of then Czechoslovakia curtailed travel. So, by literature (and not the movie), must refer to The Venetian Affair by Helen MacInnes.

  17. My in-laws had a wonderful holiday for their 50th Anniversay in Italy and the one they took the most pictures of was Venice. My father-in-law family was from Naples but they had more stories to tell us about Venice than anyone else they visited.

The only canal I was ever on was the Erie Canal. In fact the city I grew up in had an Erie Boulevard that used to BE part of the canal. They still have locks ouside the city that are still operational. My husband's favorite canal is the only one he's ever actually been on and that's the Panama Canal but he wasn't on a large boat at the time but in a small fishing boat! He had active duty in Panama when he was in the Navy Reserves several time and on one trip on their day off a bunch of sailors (okay no boats skills involved they were on Naval Air) decided to read a boat and go FISHING IN THE PANAMA CANAL! Actually they had a great time and took fish back to cook for dinner - knowing them they probably set it up on the tarmac back at the base).
