London may be hosting the Olympics this summer, but Scotland will always be home to the Highland Games. Scottish families brought the time honored tradition to the US, where fans such as romance author Nancy Lee Badger have become part of it. Nancy joins us today with a guest post about the Highland Games.
My latest release is not a book I sat down, wrote, then chose to self-publish. No, it made the rounds at two Romance Writers of America conferences where I pitched the concept to several agents and an editor. After rewriting it, I then sent out query letters to other agents and editors. When an editor requested to read the manuscript and then requested a revision, I worked on it for months and then sent it out with high hopes. Alas, after six more months of WAITING, she sent me a lovely rejection letter. Sigh.
Selling a book takes time; sometimes longer than actually writing and editing your story. What kept me going when the latest rejection letter hit my e-mail in-box? I love all things Scottish. More importantly, I wrote the story to include something near and dear to my heart: Scottish Highland Games.
Since the early 1980’s, my husband has volunteered at the New Hampshire Highland Games held every fall in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His parents had dragged us to the earlier Scottish festival held in Lincoln, NH and hubby was proud to have a local venue where he could wear his kilt and meet with people interested in their Scottish heritage.
I raised two boys, so I missed out for a few years. When my youngest was about 10 years old and showed interest in his heritage, I joined hubby and son as volunteers at the games. These festivals take place all over the east coast of the United States and need volunteers in order to keep their festivals running. Taking a few days out of the year to help was easy.
My oldest son has joined in, and has yet to buy a kilt. My youngest son, Eric, made the decision and ordered his. A decision you say? Seems his ancestors can claim affiliation with two different clans; the Gunns and the MacBeans, but Eric came up with an unusual choice after meeting a fellow soldier at the Grandfather Mountain Games in western North Carolina. The soldier proudly wore a kilt in the Army digital camouflage pattern!
Now, Eric proudly wears this kilt while he assists the organization that runs the New Hampshire games. We are in charge of the Information tent, which is set adjacent to the entrance to the ski area that hosts the games. EVERYONE sees Eric! Also, since we are in charge of the raffle, he carries the huge ticket tumbler across the parade grounds to the stage during the closing ceremonies. He stands proudly in front of thousands of visitors who wonder if they won the trip to Scotland.
We enjoy having Eric around to help at the games. There were a couple of times he had to miss out due to being stationed with B Company, 32D Signal Battalion in Darmstadt, Germany and during deployment to Iraq. He is home, now, and currently in the Army Reserves while attending college. We are fortunate any year he can accompany us to the games. Volunteering, like his brothers, is his choice!
For more information about the New Hampshire Highland Games, check out www.NHScot.org.
Hope to see you there September 21-23, 2012. Look for me under the Info tent next to the Parade Ground. In the meantime, check out my latest Scottish Time travel release that starts and ends at a present day Highland Games.

| Kim's children pose with the piper at Huntington Castle. |
Mahalo, Nancy, for sharing about the Highland Games! Like Nancy, I have two boys and I've tried to expose them to the Scottish culture! Nancy's contest is open through Saturday, June 16, 10 pm in Hawaii. I'll post the winner on Sunday, June 17.
Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii

Thanks for a fun post and giveaway!
ReplyDeleteUmmm... I work way too much so I don't have a lot of free time, but I do/did volunteer through work at a lot of their outreach events. I work for a Children's Hospital so we have a lot to do :)
Great post today! I volunteer with my neighborhood watch.
ReplyDeleteBarbara
Oh, the Highland Games! I wish I was closer to them. I try to give some time to the elementary school because it helps all children, not just my own.
ReplyDeleteSue
Sue...type in 'Scottish Games' in your browser, then add your state or next door states and you will be amazed. You might find a games or festival happening near you! Keep volunteering. I have always believed a happy life includes 'paying it forward.' Thanks for the opportuity to guest post, Ki,!
ReplyDeleteI want a camo kilt, too! I volunteer with the Red Cross.
ReplyDeleteDorothy
I've done lots of PTA and church; however, over the past 14 years, have been a member of the neighborhood library board. And there's a few other things tossed in as well. I have a hard time saying no. lol

I love my local library! In our county, if we see a book listed in stock in another library in a town far away, they will have it for me in a few days! Tons of audio books, too.
DeleteVery nice post Nancy. Kim - I envy you! ;o) I miss the Aloha Chapter and I really miss Hickam! Take care!
ReplyDeleteOh, Nancy - you wanted to know about volunteering. Well, I volunteer at many different thing: I have been the VP for the Mannheim Community Club - for military spouses and contractors, Testing Coordinator for the Military Homeschoolers Chapter, Friends of the Library volunteer, Feed America volunteer, Registrar and Assistant Coach for our kid's swim team, regular volunteer for DH's squadrons and detachment spouse groups, reading tudor, category coordinator and judge for a few writing contests, VP communications for Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, and many more. Whew! No wonder it has taken me 6 years to write a book!
My first volunteer job as a teenager was being a candystriper which I really enjoyed. Then later on as an asst. girl scout leader, I use to do volunteer projects in a women's club and now my husband and I help out at our local American Legion.
ReplyDeleteI love anything Highlander :)
Wow! I was a candystriper all through high school at the huge hospital where I was born! I logged over 550 hours. I think it led to me being a volunteer EMT in the tiny NH town I raised my family in.
DeleteI volunteer my time helping out with genealogy questions. It is really fun helping people find out their histories. I love the idea of helping them find their stories. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Brunette Librarian Blog
I volunteer at the Literacy Council by sorting and labeling books and helping with clerical duties. I volunteer at church by taking pictures of events, baking and assisting with the Ladies Guild.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of incorporating the Highland Games into a romance book! I volunteer with my church's food bank.
ReplyDeleteAnne
I volunteered at the Diabetes Clinic.
ReplyDeleteThis diabetic thanks you!
DeleteI volunteer my time with my neighbors.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a girl scout leader for years and years. Now I do LEGO robotics.
ReplyDeleteMy oh my, I was a girl scout from Brownies trough senior in higha school I loved camp, especially horse camp. Someday when I am a wealthy author or win the lottery I will own a horse.
DeleteI do lots of volunteering as I feel it is vital to the success of our children. So I do things for the kids. I am the hockey manager for my son's team. I teach the Children's Church arts and crafts every 4th Sunday. I am the Popcorn Kernel (coordinate all popcorn sales) for our pack for the Boy Scouts. I serve on many committees for my school that I teach. I am also considering starting a Sign Language Club at the middle school. Gosh do I have any more time?!
ReplyDeleteMel
Years ago I volunteered as our High School Band Mother, Pink Lady with our local Hospital, Hospice, and Girl Scout Co-Leader.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your new book sales. I love the books with themes to anything Scotish.
I volunteer via my sorority at a local thrift shop... which family's plaid are you wearing?
ReplyDeleteThat is the MacBean tartan. You should see hubby in his kilt which I won for him by buying tickets (in support of a non-profit) He can trace his roots directly back to John Bean of Exeter, NH
DeleteCongrats on your novel, Nancy! It sounds like you had a rough start with it, but it seems to have turned out well. I love the blurb and am adding it to my TBR! I have read some highlander books but none had the games in them. I think it is wonderful that you and your family volunteer your time this way and follow your heritage. It sounds like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI used to volunteer at my son's school when he was in elementary. Now, I volunteer my time watching my friends' children when they have to work. It can be taxing having several children under 7 running around needing different things. I love them all though. I would like to volunteer with some type of medical group, but have a small child and will have to wait until he gets older to do that. :) I wish you success with your book! :D
My help is so small comparing to yours.
ReplyDeleteI try to help as volunteer partly at RT Conventions & RWA Conferences. I recently volunteered to become a moderator at FF&P Online Classes.
Wish you all the best,
Adila
I already asked if I could volunteer at this fall's Moonlight & Magnolias writer's conference. Pay it forward and reap the rewards!
