My family was also a winner on Saturday as BATTLESHIP came to the base theater! Of course we attended an off base theater during opening day weekend ... but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to watch it one more time on the big screen. I found it just as compelling even though I knew was was coming ... I was even teary eyed when the old salts "reported for duty" on the Mighty Mo.
BATTLESHIP'S director, Peter Berg, responded to the movie's poor performance (at this link):
With "Battleship," he said, the scale of the movie simply overwhelmed everything else. "It was a movie that I tried as hard as I could to get inside of. But the concept is so big and powerful, and the money is so big and so powerful, that the movie is going to run away with itself."
High concept. They are buzz words at writing conferences. What is high concept? From Lori Wilde on Romance University (at this link),
1) It’s different.
2) It’s universal.
3) It has instant emotional appeal.
4) You can immediately visualize the entire story.
5) It can be stated in one sentence.
BATTLESHIP'S high concept in one sentence:
A self destructive twenty something becomes an
"officer and gentleman" after fighting aliens.
It appealed to my military family ... but it didn't appeal to the American public. I always seem to be on the opposite side of popular opinion. How about you ... do you have a favorite book, film or TV show that was not well received? One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash. This giveaway is open to all readers. Comments are open through Saturday, July 7, 10 pm in Hawaii. I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 8.
Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii

One of my favorite movies is "Mumford" and it didn't well at the box office.
ReplyDeleteI don't take much notice of hype whether, it's for a book or movie or even a TV show. I like what I like & if it's not popular I probably wouldn't even know.
ReplyDeleteBig congrats to all winners. I really like "Good wife", but it wasn't well received here in Germany. I hope that they will continue showing the series. I can buy the US Dvds, but to watch a whole series in English is too much for her.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners this week.
ReplyDeleteHappy Canada Day to all Canadians!!
Congrats to all the winners! My husband and I never go by movie reviews.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners. Maybe I will check out Battle ship
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners. WTG !
ReplyDeleteI never listen to the critics. If I like something I'm going to watch it anyway.
I really haven't been to a movie in a long time so I can't even remember one. :)I will check out Battle Ship.

Congrats to the winners!
ReplyDeleteI don't go to the movies but if I did I probably wouldn't listen to the critics.
I am Like the rest sometimes I think these peep who review movies Book ect are Just Blow Hards... I have seen many a film that someone said was CRAP but LOVED it so much I watched it over again & again.
ReplyDeleteCongrates to All the winners.

Congrats to the winners!
ReplyDeleteI always liked "High Road to China" with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong, which I don't think did very well.
Thanks so much!!!! Congrats to all the other winners :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked Battleship. The actor who played the main character isn't my favorite but I loved the action and that they used so many diverse characters to round out the cast. I don't know why critics love or hate a movie... it almost seems random at times.
I've seen lots of great movies and television shows that just didn't work for the masses. It's always so disappointing when that happens. I haven't had a chance to see Battleship, but I think I would really like it. A couple of television shows that were gone too soon are Firefly and Jericho - they only aired for a short time. At least Firefly has a cult following and got a movie made from it (Serenity). There was another show that lasted a while (4 seasons) but I was very sad to see it go - The Unit - I loved it!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners. I find I'm better off if I don't listen to all the hype. Many times it's a let down (I'm thinking of the silent movie that won the oscar last year - hated it) and other movies that didn't get good reviews can be wonderful. I usually just take my chances lol.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners. I don't go to movies anymore but watch on tv. I don't go by critics but do listen to my daughter and if she said was bad, I don't watch.

I don't pay attention to the reviews for movies. I just want it if it sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much into paying attention to public opinion. I just make up my mind for myself.
ReplyDeleteI am not one to follow public opinion. If the movie is bad, I am more likely to watch it.

Congrats winners!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am with you, I always seem to love movies that do poorly in the box office. Movies like Predator vs Alien or Battleship. My husabnd calls me a dork but I still love the stuff.
I don't listen a lot to the professional critics, but if I do it's more to go the opposite of what they say. They often love things that I've struggled to get thru or found depressing. I just want to be entertained.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all the winners who won books from last weeks fabulous authors!
When it comes to movies my husband and I stopped reading movie reviews shortly after we met! Instead we try to find out if it was based on a book or written for a movie only!
We stopped even reading reviews a few months after we started dating 43 years ago when we realized that what we liked the reviewers hated! As I learned in Latin class in the 1960's De gusibus non este disputondum" (forgive the bad spelling but a loose translation is "Everyone to their own fancy said Nancy as she kissed the cow"!
Can't really recall a specific book or film that I really like that was not well received, but I am of the camp that does not read movie reviews because more often than not, my opinions are usually different than movie critics so I just decide what I want to watch based on my thoughts to trailers.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the lucky winners. Like many of the comments indicate, I don't pay too much attention to the critics/reviews, primarily because I seem to like shows that get cancelled and movies & books that get bad reviews.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all the winners! I enjoyed the show Prime Suspect on NBC this past fall but it was cancelled.
