Aloha to Scott Eagan from the Greyhaus Literary Agency

I am following the online discussions of the upcoming RWA National Conference at #RWA12, #RWA2012, #RWAtips, and #RWAsurvivaltips.  After reading Scott Eagan's tweets, I invited him for a cozy chat about his life as a literary agent.

Kim:  What exactly do you do as a literary agent?

Scott:  A literary agent actually wears many hats. We not only work as the "go-between" with the writers and the publishers, we also spend a lot of time consulting and editing with our writers. For me personally, I try to work with authors from the early brainstorming phase through the final completion. Of course, this all depends on the writer. Some of my writers take a more independent approach.

Along with this aspect, we obviously are making calls to editors to champion our authors books. We not only want to see the projects published, but we also want to see the best situations for the authors once they are under contract. This is that "good cop - bad cop" approach. We want you and your editor to be on great terms when working on your latest projects. If there is a problem, you let the agent handle it.

We are also there as a friend. There are some days that, as an agent, the only work we have to do with our writers is to tell them they are still worthy. We all have those bad days and sometimes it is great to know you have a shoulder to cry on.

Outside of this work, at Greyhaus, one of my missions is to provide education and communication, so that too takes up a lot of time. Obviously I maintain the blog which is a 5 day a week schedule. I also provide workshops and seminars (both in person and online). This means a lot of prep work to streamline the session specifically for the group I will be working with. So, if you want me to come to the Islands, let me know and I'll be right there! (smile).

I also provide a lot of critiques for writing groups.

If Scott came to Hawaii, we'd welcome him with a lei.

Kim:  What trends do you see emerging in Romanceland?

Scott:  The trend question is always a tough one since many authors think they will jump on board with it immediately. First of all, never follow trends. Write your story and go with that.

But with that said, I think the romance industry is really making some new shifts. I think it is desperately looking to find that new voice and style. I think the stories are trying to be more realistic. Contemporary is certainly heading in that direction. In fact, I think if you hear a lot of people talk about "women's fiction" what they are really talking about is contemporary romance.

In the other genres, I think we are seeing the romance element starting to take a smaller role in the storyline (which I think is a shame). I think people are so hung up on the great plot line that the romance is becoming secondary. I will say, if you can find a way to bring that romance back in, you will be in great shape!

Bringing the romance back ... to the beach!

Kim:  What are you reading, other than romance submissions?

Scott:  Honestly, most of my day is reading romance. I also simply enjoy reading romance so that is what I read. I did just start reading the Wicked Stories since I'll be seeing the musical in November and wanted to get caught up on those. Also reading THE GREATER JOURNEY by David McCullough.

  2. I love Historical reads, so different time periods would be great. I do love Regency England, but I'd be happy to read further back in history & different countries.

  6. Wow! Do I see a pattern here? I was going to comment that I'm noticing a resurgence of historical fiction, with and without romance. But of course my preference is a love story combined with a great historical setting and characters. Love to read them, and enjoy writing them! MHP

  7. Great Interview!!! Fabulous choice for an agent to interview! As far as trends, I like a strong heroine with sweet romance and some historical elements described in the plot (if it adds to the story).

  8. I would like to see more stories where the characters are struggling with everyday troubles, the heroes aren't fabulous and the relationship seems equal. I guess the more realism thing.

  9. I would like to see more romantic suspense and more mysteries.

  10. I would like to see more history mixed with romance. A good example would be Amanda Scott. She keeps a good romance going. But you learn a lot about Scotland as well.

  12. I want MORE romance actually... and humour... Would be sad to see less romance in romance books!

  13. I loved hearing you say the writers should write want they want and not what the trend is. I am another historical lover. I enjoy all the time periods but the older the better! And characters always come first with me :)

  14. Kim -

Great interview with Scott! As a reader it was interesting to find out more about what help an author gets moving toward acceptance and publication.

I'm thrilled to seeing some of the new debut authors setting their own trends in the romance world as well as some of the established authors not submitting to the fleeting whims prevalent in some of today's books!

After all a great story is a great story and after all the fluff around today that's what I'm looking for when I'm picking up a book!

  15. I would like to see more larger people in the stories. Not everyone is a size 5 and even though the story might be about a plump woman..the cover does not reflect that. I would like to see more covers reflect real size women.

  16. I tend to steer away from proclaimed "trends" - there have been several books that became best sellers, everybody jumped on the bandwagon, but when it came down to it, many people eventually admitted they didn't enjoy the read, they just read it cause 'everyone was talking about it'. So I just want a good story that is well written, so I either stick with known authors (of which I have a lot on my lists) or reviews from bloggers who have steered me well in the past.

  17. Nice interview. There aren't any trends I want to see.

  18. Yes, I know Scott. I still have the reject letter LOL! Anyway, I like romance in a story. A Happy ever after or, at least, happy for now ending where the main characters (whether they be M/F or M/M or F/F) survive obstacles and fall into each others hearts.

  19. What a great little interview. Scott sure sounds like he has a full plate. I never knew an agent would help brainstorm with an author, so much that goes on behind the scenes. I do agree with you that romance is taking a baskseat to heavier plot lines. I don't think sacrificing the love story in a plot necessarily makes it stronger, everyone likes to have a little love. Cartoons, books, tv, and movies, always have a little love story.
    Thanks for sharing!

  20. I definitely want to see more Western romances. I like the Wild West and open land. Some of my favorite heroes come from there. I've been reading a lot of them lately and enjoy them.

  21. No particular trend for me as I'm pretty open to anything as long as there's a good story in there :)
