Every Saturday, I celebrate little victories ... to appreciate the good that came my way. Today I celebrate a BIG victory following the RWA National Conference.
On Wednesday, July 25, I attended the Librarians' Day, including a delicious lunch with keynote speaker Kerrelyn Sparks. Readers were treated to WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE from Avon Romance. I was still chatting as the catering staff cleaned up around. Since I was the last reader standing, the staff gave me a box of the extra books. I am not one to turn down books, especially when I give away books to military spouses.
On Thursday, July 26, the conference keynote speaker was Stephanie Laurens. Readers were treated to THE CAPTURE OF THE EARL OF GLENCRAE from Avon Romance. The catering staff placed the extra books in the goody room.
On Friday, July 27, the Awards Luncheon featured Robyn Carr. Readers were treated to REDWOOD BEND from Mira Books. Again, the catering staff placed the extra books in the goody room.
By now, the goody room was overflowing with extra books plus RT Book Review magazines. Across the street at the Hilton, the hotel staff was setting up the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program for military families to reconnect with their soldiers returning home from deployment.
The wheels began to turn in my mind.
I asked the RWA staff to donate the extra books to the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program ... and they agreed! I grabbed a bellman, loaded the luggage cart, and delivered the books to Hilton.
Last week, RWA forwarded an email from Mr. Wren:
Hello!
I am with the United States Army Reserve Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program. We had a conference in July at the Anaheim Hilton while your conference was at the Marriott.
On Saturday, a woman came to us, from your group, with a HUGE cart full of books to be donated to the Service Members and their families.
They where a hit - we didn't even finish putting the books on display before the table was surrounded by readers! I was hoping to find out who she is and how to get in touch with her so I can pass on the thanks and gratitude of the Service Members and
their families.
Can you assist me in locating that Good Samaritan?

I contacted Mr. Wren and he replied,
Ah, I'm glad I was able to find you! Thanks for your support - it's gratitude like that which gives our service meaning!
And yes, the books where a huge hit! And the ones with the
more... eye catching covers just FLEW off the table!
I have a poster-board that is full of notes and signatures from the Service Members and their families showing their gratitude for the donation.

Love that the "eye catching covers just flew off the table!" Let's celebrate a big victory for romance readers and military families! Mahalo, Kerrelyn, Stephanie, and Robyn, for making a difference!

That's a vicotry definitely worth celebrating. I'm sure many military spouses and book lovers in general will benefit. It sounds like you had fun!
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeballing Spark's book for some time. But wow, I envy you for getting to have so much fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous story. I can just picture the books with the eye catching covers. A big victory I'd say.
ReplyDeleteThat's super awesome. I love when people are super nice to those that serve the country, because in some areas they are not so friendly to the servicemen. It makes it special.
ReplyDeleteLoved that story. Books are always so nice to give to people and everyone seems to love to get them. You do so much and we all thank you for that, you really do make a difference.

That is an awesome story!! It is so wonderful that you thought of all of those people as well as the RWA staff donating their extras! I love happy stories and those people go through so much, they need a little something to take their mind someplace else sometimes. :)
ReplyDeleteYou ROCK, Kim!!!
What a great story. You make such a difference, Kim. Thank God for you.
ReplyDeleteYou know, Kim, I saw that sign...and had a quick thought to myself, "I wonder if there's something I could do"...but, then I just kept walking by. Leave it to you to know exactly what to do!! I'm amazed at how much, after you have already served yourself (and continue to serve in support of your husband and family) - you continue to serve others as well. You are an amazing woman!! So, very thoughtful and caring. You ROCK!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic story and I agree that you are more than generous and always thinking of others. What a wonderful treat for those who deserve some extra! The three author's above are all fabulous.

Awesome!!
ReplyDeleteKim -
ReplyDeleteThank you from a retired Vietnam Navy Vet's wife!
I had never heard of the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program before but am thrilled that military families toay have the opportunity to reconnect with their soldiers returning home from deployment. How different this is than when our servicemen returned from fighting during Vietnam and it's wonderful to know that the men and women who are in the service today and their families are getting support they so richly deserve.
Yay, Kim. I'm so glad you got the RWA staff to donate the extra books.
ReplyDeleteKim you are awesome! I am so glad he got a hold of you to express his thanks!
ReplyDeleteKim you are an awesome lady. I am glad you had such a wonderful thought. And it is great that the man contacted you and thanked you for your brilliance. Hugs and Mahalo for everything. Maybe I will meet you some day.
ReplyDeleteHow absolutely wonderful!! You must have a really warm feeling in your heart. You are just an amazing woman, Kim. Thanks for all you do!!
ReplyDeleteAwwww... what a great story! :)
ReplyDeleteFirst, as a librarian, I love that they have a Librarian's Day at the RWA Conference! I didn't know that. Second, you are always looking for ways to help & recognize our service men and women, so how wonderful that this opportunity came about. It was a brilliant idea, Kim and such a wonderful gesture. Thank-you for that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story you've shared, Kim! You are an amazing and awesome lady, thank you for making a difference with all that you do! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat story. I am so glad that you ended up with the books to share with military personnel and families.
ReplyDeleteLovely story.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you were received those books to share with the military personnel and families. I like to pass on books to our Senior Center and to our local hospital.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim for 'thinking outside the book' and sharing leftover books with those wonderful and deserving military families. What a proud moment for both you and RWA (whoever you talked to at RWA could have said 'no') Hopefully we have gained a few more readers!

ReplyDeleteDeepest gratitude to you, Kim, for making this happen!
ReplyDeleteInspiring as always and I am grateful to say I know you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Kim! You are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely story. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteKim--
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea it was to move the books across the hall to the Yellow RIbbon group! You are an amazing ambassador between the military and the romance community. I keep hoping you'll come back to Maryland so there will be more Ft. Meade romance teas!
Kim, you are an inspiration! Keep those wheels turning in your mind because they make great things happen. I love this story!
ReplyDeleteWe can't do enough to thank or serivice men and women and their families. What a lovely thing to do--and they were, as always, so appreciative. I'm doing 2 fundraiser/booksignings for our local veterans this coming week, donating raffle baskets and door prizes and royalties. They have been wonderful and, again, so appreciative. Here's to them...and to you...for thinking of and sharing with them.
