Here in Hawaii, we have a Duke .... Duke Kahanamoku, the Ambassador of Aloha. We also have a Diamond ... Diamond Head, the iconic symbol of Waikiki Beach. Here at SOS Aloha, I have Shana Galen, author of WHEN YOU GIVE A DUKE A DIAMOND!
Kim: Tell us about the Houston area - what is your favorite sight, sound, and smell?
Shana: Thanks so much for having me back! Houston is such a great city, and I'm fortunate to live here. One sight I love is the view from the top of the Edwards' Theater parking garage. My 5 a.m. fitness boot camp does a workout at that location once every couple months, and it's so pretty to see the whole city lit up against the backdrop of the early morning sky. As far as sounds, I'm a big fan of silence. And the smell is easy. My daughter's music class is near a Pappasito's Mexican restaurant and the smell of the fajitas cooking makes my mouth water every week—and I'm a vegetarian!

Kim: How did you become a member of the Sisterhood of the Jaunty Quills? What is the most outrageous thing you all have done?
Shana: I'm actually one of the founding members of the Sisterhood of the Jaunty Quills. A bunch of us were new authors at Avon and we saw the success of the now defunct Squawk Radio, so we started our own blog. Our once yearly in-person meetings aren't really outrageous, but they're fun. We all talk over one another, trying to hear the latest news and catch up on all the gossip.
Kim: I enjoyed seeing you at RWA's Literacy Signing! What is the most challenging and rewarding aspects of attending the national convention?
Kim: I enjoyed seeing you at RWA's Literacy Signing! What is the most challenging and rewarding aspects of attending the national convention?
Shana: It was great to see you several times at the RWA conference. For me, the biggest challenge is the lack of time by myself. I'm one of those people who is exhausted by being around a lot of people for any length of time. I have to take frequent breaks in my room to regroup. I'm also an early-riser, and I love being one of the only people awake in the early morning hours. That's a perfect time to get some writing done.
Kim: Tell us about your new series, “Jewels of the Ton,” and your new book, WHEN YOU GIVE A DUKE A DIAMOND.
Kim: Tell us about your new series, “Jewels of the Ton,” and your new book, WHEN YOU GIVE A DUKE A DIAMOND.
Shana: The Jewels of the Ton is a new series featuring three notorious Regency courtesans whose lives are filled with secrets and who are caught in a search for missing diamonds. They also meet some dangerous, and intriguing, men.
When You Give a Duke a Diamond is the story of Juliette, dubbed the Duchess of Dalliance. She has a reputation as an ice queen, but those who know her know she's actually quite fun and spontaneous. She can be aloof, but she has her reasons and legitimate fears. Will is a duke, who likes his life orderly and routine. He doesn't like scandal. He doesn't like disruptions. And he doesn't like Juliette. But when she witnesses the murder of his fiancée and becomes the killer's next target, Will is honor-bound to protect her.
Kim: What's next for Shana Galen?

Kim: What's next for Shana Galen?
Shana: If You Give a Rake a Ruby, Fallon's story, is the next in the series and will be released in March 2013. Currently, I'm finishing up the next in my Lord and Lady Spy series, which is tentatively titled True Spies.

He had a perfectly orderly life…
William, the sixth Duke of Pelham, enjoys his punctual, securely structured life. Orderly and predictable—that’s the way he likes it. But he’s in the public eye, and the scandal sheets will make up anything to sell papers. When the gossips link him to Juliette, one of the most beautiful and celebrated courtesans in London, chaos doesn’t begin to describe what happens next…
Until she came along…
Juliette is nicknamed the Duchess of Dalliance, and has the cream of the nobility at her beck and call. It’s seriously disruptive to have the duke who’s the biggest catch on the Marriage Mart scaring her other suitors away. Then she discovers William’s darkest secret and decides what he needs in his life is the kind of excitement only she can provide…

Mmm, difficult to answer. I guess I would have to say an opal. It was my mamaw's birthstone and she always wore one be it ring, necklace or earrings. I wore a pair of hers at my wedding but unfortunately I asked one of hubby's cousins to watch over it but never got it back
ReplyDeleteI love opals, Raonaid. My grandmother gave me several, and they are beautiful.
DeleteI like sapphires.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! Jane. I have some sapphire earrings, and they are my daughter's birthstone.
DeleteTurquoise. It's my birthstone and I like pairing it with the color black.
ReplyDeleteMe, too, Lory Lee! I wore a black dress with turquoise jewelry to my signing last week.
DeleteMy parents gave me the most beautiful string of pearls for my 21st. Definitely my favourite.
ReplyDeleteI really like Amethists, that deep purple color is fab.
ReplyDeletePurple is my favorite color, so I love amethysts too.
DeleteWith a name like mine, how can I not choose Diamonds as my favorite jewel. My husband always tells me that I've got the the biggest "Diamond" that I will ever have. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love Shana's books, and I really want to read "When You Give A Duke A Diamond".
LOL, Diane! Your husband sounds funny.
Deletei love saphier
ReplyDeleteI do too, Eli. I have a necklace with a sapphire I'm going to give to my daughter when she's old enough not to destroy it.
Deletei adore opals which are my birthstone. i got a lovely opal ring for my 18th birthday and when ever any of my relatives go to Australia they bring home opal jewelry for me
ReplyDeleteparisfan_ca@yahoo.com
Laurie, is Australia known for opals? Maybe that's a good reason to make a visit...
DeleteI am a ruby or opal fan. I love rubies, they are just beautiful. I got a ruby in the first ring the my boyfriend bought me. Kind of has become a favorite. I have also always loved opals. It has been my favorite since I was a little girl, my mom & dad always would buy me something with an opal in it.
ReplyDeletebig fan of Shana's books. Very exicted for the next Lord & Lady Spy book. Loved the first one and definately eagerly awaiting the next. Thanks for the giveaway.
christinebails at yahoo dot com
Chris, I love the red in rubies. It's always so striking. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI LOVE mystic fire topaz. Sure, it's lab manufactured, but I love all the colors in it and how it changes depending on lighting. For natural gems though, I love most with darker, richer colors like emeralds and sapphires. Not a fan of diamonds myself. The color ones are pretty, but a standard diamond is just bland to me. And despite how expensive they can get, everyone has some. I like my jewelry to be more unique (kind of a hipster thing to say but true). My boyfriend shies away from jewelry gifts because he doesn't want to try to figure out my tastes :-P
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. Email is smiles [at] andrew [dot] cmu [dot] edu. :-)
Sarah, mystic fire topaz is gorgeous. I have no problem with manufactured gems :-)
DeleteKim, thanks for having me today!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite gem is the Tanzanite. It's too bad that they cost an arm and a leg! Great interview and thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeleteSheryl, tanzanites are gorgeous and seriously expensive. I have a friend who is a geologist and that's the gem in her wedding ring.
DeleteThanks for a fun post and congrats to Shana on the new release! I'd have to say opals too :)
ReplyDeleteErin, we have a lot of opal fans today. Good taste!
DeleteI don't think I would turn down any of the gems mentioned. I am going to say diamond because after losing my first stone in my wedding ring after 25 years, my husband had a pear shape diamond ring made for me that I love!
ReplyDeletecatslady, I never turn down jewelry :-)
DeleteYay to fellow Houstonian Shana! (And you are oh so right about the smell of sizzling fajitas.) This series sounds great and I can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteAs for gems--It's hard to have a wrong answer here! I'll go with diamonds. I have a lot of gemstone jewelry, but the only piece I wear everyday is my diamond wedding ring. Second place would be amethyst. I have a lovely large amethyst cross I wear a lot.
LSU Reader, I think amethysts and diamonds has to be my favorite pairing. I had Mexican food tonight, as a matter of fact!
DeleteI love them all! I always have a hard time choosing. ALl of them have such pretty colors when seen in the natural light...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interview Shana
email: alinutza4u2004(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk
Thanks for stopping by, Aly. Maybe you should go with a bracelet of alternating gems.
DeleteMy favorite jewel is a blue topaz, I love the brilliant blue color and it goes so well with my eyes. :D It also looks good surrounded by diamonds. ;o)
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I think blue topaz is gorgeous too. I love the light blue color.
DeleteEmerald is my favorite. A good emerald, aside from being pretty, is worth more than diamonds.
ReplyDeleteSheree, emeralds are my sister's birthstone, so she's always laid claim to them. Do you see that story on 60 Minutes about the guy who found all the emeralds off the coast of Key West? Amazing!
DeleteGarnet is my favorite gem but I do like hematite.
ReplyDeleteDebby, I love hematite. I have a few pieces using it. I wear a lot of black, and I like black jewelry.
DeleteMy favorite is Amethyst. Karen C
ReplyDeletePurple is my favorite color, Karen. Amethysts are beautiful.
DeleteI love moonstone! It is just so soft and pretty.
ReplyDeleteAquarianDancer, moonstone is really, really pretty. It even has a pretty name.
DeleteI like diamonds.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot go wrong with diamonds, bn100. :-)
DeleteI love emeralds. I also love diamonds too.
ReplyDeleteMelody, I love them together! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLucky you, getting to meet Shana!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am very excited to read that there is another book coming up tied into Lord and Lady Spy, loved that book!
Thanks, Lexi. It's always fun to meet readers. I met a few at a signing for my friends tonight.
DeleteKim, thank you so much for hosting me today. I'll stop by over the next few days to make sure I respond to everyone. Readers, thank you for coming by and for taking the time to comment.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite gem is Amethyst (purple is my favorite color). Congrats on the new release Shana. Looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteJune M.
June, purple is my favorite color too. I have a special love for amethysts.
DeleteI am a big fan of blue sapphires (my husband's birthstone also) and peridot (my birthstone). While I think other stones are pretty (I have a list a mile long and two miles wide of gemstones that I covet ;-) ) these two are my favorites because the sapphire comes in such a wide variety of blues (and other colors as well, which a lot of people aren't aware of) and the peridot (or Olivine)is always green (although it varies from a yellowish green to almost an emerald color depending upon how much iron is in it). I would love to get a ring made with both a blue sapphire and peridots on it!
ReplyDeleteLadyRed, you seem to really know your gems. I have a friend who is a geologist, and I always defer to her in these matters. I think I could ask you too next time!
DeleteAmethyst...holds a special (private) meaning to me.
ReplyDeleteI love amethysts. Thanks for stopping by, booksbySteph
DeleteBlue Sapphire - my birthstone.
ReplyDeleteSeptember baby, huh, Di? My daughter is too. :-)
DeleteI love Shana's books and am looking forward to reading the whole series.
ReplyDeleteI have always favored the color purple. I also like blue however. My favorite shoes are a pair of cowboy boots my husband bought for me several years ago in Colorado. My favorite purse is a big brown one that I can almost fit the kitchen sink in. Lol!
Whoops! Got mixed up on my posts. Sorry! I love real blue and purple sapphires surrounded with diamonds.
ReplyDeleteCathy, I liked reading all your favorites! Thanks :-) I have never seen a purple sapphire. They sound gorgeous.
DeleteHi Kim and Galen!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I didn't get a chance to stop by sooner! I can't wait to read When You Give A Duke A Diamond and If You Give A Rake A Ruby but my favorite gem isn't a jewel but is my husband!
My favorite ring on the other hand is my simple gold band - my wedding ring - which he placed on my hand 42 years ago!
When I had both of my sons I refused to let the doctor remove it and he had to wrap tape around my finger (and my ring) when I had both my sons!
Jeanne, that's so sweet. Your husband does sound like a gem!
DeleteI love Aquamarine. It's actually my birthstone. I want to tell Shana how very much I LOVE her books. From the Sons of The Revolution I still love Armand. But I'm looking forward to the new series. Congrats on the new release.
ReplyDeleteCarol L.
Carol, are you a December baby? I tam too, and I think that's the December birthstone. And thanks for the compliments.
DeleteThe sapphire is my favorite since it is blue, my favorite color.
ReplyDeleteMaureen, sapphires are gorgeous. I love the dark blue.
DeleteEmeralds!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove, love your blog! This is really for jewelry lovers, more power to you!
