Aloha to Megan Mulry and A ROYAL PAIN

On this date in 1921, the Chicago Theater opened as the "Wonder Theater of the World."  From its website (at this link),

Built in French Baroque style, The Chicago Theatre's exterior features a miniature replica of Paris' Arc de Triomphe, sculpted above its State Street marquee. Faced in a glazed, off-white terra cotta, the triumphal arch is sixty feet wide and six stories high.

The grand lobby, modeled after the Royal Chapel at Versailles, is five stories high and surrounded by gallery promenades at the mezzanine and balcony levels. The grand staircase is patterned after that of the Paris Opera House and ascends to the various levels of the Great Balcony.

It may be one place that Max took Bronte on a date in Megan Mulry's A ROYAL PAIN, available November 1 for Sourcebooks Landmark:

Smart, ambitious, and career driven, Bronte Talbot started following British royalty in the gossip mags only to annoy her intellectual father. But her fascination has turned into a not-so-secret guilty pleasure. When she starts dating a charming British doctoral student, she teases him unmercifully about the latest scandals of his royal countrymen, only to find out—to her horror!!—that she's been having a fling with the nineteenth Duke of Northrop, and now he wants to make her...a duchess?

In spite of her frivolous passion for all things royal, Bronte isn't at all sure she wants the reality. Is becoming royalty every American woman's secret dream, or is it a nightmare of disapproving dowagers, paparazzi, stiff-upper-lip tea parties, and over-the-top hats?

Northrop is one of the ancient names from the conquest.

I posted my five star review of A ROYAL PAIN on Goodreads at this link.   I am giving away a print copy of A ROYAL PAIN to one randomly selected commenter.  To enter the giveaway,

1.  Leave a comment about a favorite building you have visited.   My husband's barbershop chorus often performs in the historic Hawaii Theater - James MacArthur, H50's original Danno, was a celebrity patron.

2.  This giveaway is open to all readers.

3.  Comments are open through Saturday, October 27, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, October 28.

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

  1. My friends and I would go to the Chicago Theater
when we were younger. A lot of the theaters in Chicago have beautiful lobbies. My favorite building to visit is the McCormick House at Catigny Park in Wheaton, IL.

  8. Pittsburgh has many wonderful and old buildings. One that I think is beautiful is Heinz Hall - lots of wonderful plays and symphonies have been held there. I use to work in a building that was about a dozen floors and it had this rotunda. At Christmas the Salvation Army would hold up a large sheet at the bottom and everyone would drop change down from all the floors. Now that I think about it, that was probably dangerous for those holding the sheet!
