Twitter's a buzz with Halloween.  Next will be Thanksgiving.  But there is one holiday in between - Veterans Day.  Armistice Day.  Remembrance Day.  Red Poppies from Flanders Field.  No matter what is is called, it is a day for us to thank our veterans.  From one day of service to 20 years for retirement, every veteran and his/her spouse deserves to be appreciated.

Enter Julia Quinn.  She is hosting her second annual Veterans Day Giveaway for veterans and military spouses.  100 randomly selected entrants win a Julia Quinn novel of choice.  For more details, including the link to enter, check out her website at this link.

Mahalo, Julia, for caring about our veterans!

You, too, can salute veterans!  Operation Paperback enables readers to donate gently used books for deployed soldiers.    Operation Paperback also supports VA hospitals.  In fact, one hospital in the midwest has appealed for flipflops, toiletries, and books for their patients as "they have no family."    I've started a collection at my son's school.  If you would like to help, check out Operation Paperback's website at this link.

Finally, I am coordinating Operation Holiday Card for military personnel separated from their family in Korea.   My husband is currently away in Korea and he will deliver the cards.   For more information, contact me at sos.aloha@yahoo.com.

Together, we can make a difference!

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

  2. In England we call it "Remembrance Day". I salute you Kim, for all that you do for the troops. And how kind of Julia to give out so many books. I won't enter that though, as I think that I either have most of her books.

You have my email address Kim, so send me the details please, about sending cards to the troops.

  10. Hi Kim!

Thank you so much for posting about my Veterans Day giveaway. I will confess that I didn't know very much about the military until my brother-in-law entered Officer Candidate School for the Marines (at the age of 31!!) He served one tour in Iraq and two in Afghanistan, and he also won the Marines top intelligence officer of the year award. He is no longer in the military but he still does subcontract work for the Marines at the Pentagon. I am hugely proud of him (and proud of myself for having earned his award for the Best Care Packages from the Family!

P.S. I made rum cake and then vacuum sealed it. The soldiers loved it!
