The Hawaiian word of the day is
Ka'a kaua
It is strategy.
An effective chess player employs ka'a kaua. So does a master spy and an industrious widow. Even a cat!
Enter Tracey Devlyn's CHECKMATE, MY LORD, available February 5 from Sourcebooks Casablanca:
Checkmate, My Lord is Book 2 of Devlyn's Nexus series
A desperate mother falls in love with the spymaster she's forced to betray.
THE STAKES ARE HIGH, THE PLAYERS IN POSITION...
Catherine Ashcroft leads a quiet life caring for her precocious seven-year-old daughter, until a visitor delivers a startling ultimatum. She will match wits with the enigmatic Earl of Somerton, and it's not just her heart that's in danger.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN...
Spymaster Sebastian Danvers, Earl of Somerton, is famous for his cunning. Few can outwit him and even few dare challenge him--until now. After returning to his country estate, his no-nonsense neighbor turns her seductive wiles on him--but why would a respectable widow like Catherine risk scandal for a few passionate nights in his bed?
I enjoyed Book 1, A LADY'S REVENGE, and was eager to jump back into the series. Devlyn delivers another riveting story with CHECKMATE, MY LORD whose characters resonate all that I love about the Regency Era - honor, duty, and country. Both hero and heroine engage in strategy to protect that which is most important to them ... and ultimately find that they share the same goal. Devlyn's books tend to be darker than the lighthearted Regency romp. Her books could be compared to dark chocolate. CHECKMATE, MY LORD, may be a little bitter, but it delivers a rich, full body story that offers a healthy dose of passion.
I am giving away a print copy of CHECKMATE, MY LORD to one randomly selected commenter. To enter the giveaway,
1. Do you play any games of strategy? Or how do you like your chocolate - white, milk, or dark?
2. This giveaway is open to all readers.
3. Comments are open through Saturday, February 2, 10 pm in Hawaii. I'll post the winner on Sunday, February 3.
Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii

ReplyDeleteHi Kim!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had the chance to read Tracey's debut book, A Lady Revenge, when it came out in April before you read Checkmate My Lord! It was such a fun read and as I'm sure you found out now that you got to read Checkmate My Lord before it's even released on Feb. 5th! I'm so excited that her next book, A Lady's Secret Weapon is scheduled to come out this October because I'm already looking forward to reading that as well!
I love playing games of strategy but when I play I play to win! Unfortunately after being married for 42 years my husband hates to play with me because I win! (He won't even play acey-ducey with me any more which he had learned to play when he served on an aircraft carrier during Vietnam. He still can't understand why he did so well playing with his shipmates but always losses to me!).
I guess my risk all to win all attitude and beating him every time doesn't help! Actually the game I love to beat him at best is RISK, a board game also known as "The Conquest of the World"! In the game the players control armies with which they attempt to capture territories from other players. I guess it's because since when it was first released in the 1980's he's never won a game against me! We still have one of the original games and when our sons were in Junior High we taught them to play to help them learn all the countries in the world! Believe me teaching them something was never easier!
Thanks so much, Jeanne M! I can't wait for readers to meet Sebastian (Feb) and Ethan (Oct). :)
DeleteKim, thanks so much! And big thanks to everyone who stopped by today.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Tracey
